Since the opening of our clinic in August 2004, we are operating with the first stage of our project, which is giving at cost or free of charge for people who can not afford medicine and treatment. Hopefully we will soon move into our second phase of completely free medical care for the population of 1325 families who live in the Kyan Khinn Su Quarter of Mingalardon Township. Kyan Khinn Su started out as a village and today it retains many aspects of village life. It still remains its character as a self centred community, isolated from Yangon, as one needs to drive through meandering lanes to get to this close-knit society. There are two small pagodas, monasteries, a bazaar, and a primary school.
Our clinic is situated at Number 4, Thitsar Road, of Kyan Khinn Su. There is a waiting room, an examination room, a treatment room and two rooms where patients can stay through the day and there is also a small sitting room for the doctor.
At present there is one doctor, a nurse, and a helper to care for patients for five hours every day apart from Saturdays and Sundays. When we could afford it, we would like to expand the clinic hours to 12 each day and open it seven days a week.
So far we have only the basic necessities for medical car such as disposable hypodermic syringes, which are the only kind we use, medicines, and some furniture. In the future we hope to have Ultrasound and ECG, to improve diagnostic and medical care.
We would like to ensure that eventually people here get free medical care so that they can spend more on other things such as food and education. During the five months of the rainy season, when outbreaks of flu and dengue fever occur, we treated 40 patients a day, mostly women and children.
